The Chalkida branch was founded in 2023 and is housed in part of the Ioannis Velissari camp. The themes of the Permanent Exhibition cover the historical period from the Venetian rule in Evia until today.

A: THE VENETIAN OCCUPATION IN EUBOEA (1204-1470)

The Venetian occupation is the historical period that lasted from the beginning of the 13th century until the end of the 17th century, while on the island of Evia from 1204 to 1470. Weapons dependencies and lithographs tell the story of the Venetian period.

Β’: OTTOMAN RULE 1470-1833

The Venetian rule on the island was succeeded by the Ottoman rule, which lasted from 1470 and the occupation of the island until the Greek Revolution of 1821. Weapons, uniforms, works of art, personal items and letters tell the story of the period of Ottoman rule on the island of Euboea.

C΄΄: GREEK REVOLUTION 1821

The founding of the Society of Friends and the desire for Freedom led the Greeks to the armed struggle in March 1821. Relics, weapons, costumes and works of art tell us about the heroic struggle of the Greeks for Freedom.

D: THE PERIOD OF THE KAPODISTRIAS 1827-1831

Ioannis Kapodistrias was the first governor of Greece, from 1827 to 1831.

E: OTTO’S PERIOD 1835-1862

Otto of Greece, descended from the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach, served as the first king of Greece and reigned from 1835 to 1862. Arms and lithographs recount the period of Otto’s reign in Greece.

F: GREEK-TURKISH WAR (APRIL-MAY 1897)

Weapons, lithographs, photographs, kits, personal items and documents tell the story of the Greek State’s efforts to expand its borders.

G΄: MACEDONIAN STRUGGLE 1904-1908

Moving on to the collection on the Macedonian Struggle (1904-1908), we see the effort of the Greeks to protect the region of Macedonia from the expansionist ambitions of the Bulgarians, who wanted access to the Aegean Sea. Weapons, photographs, relics, uniforms and personal items bring the Greek struggle to life.

8TH: BALKAN WARS 1912-13

The victorious battles and naval campaigns of the Balkan Wars (1921-13) allowed Greece to expand its borders. The Greeks in Macedonia, Crete, Ioannina and the islands of the North Aegean were liberated and incorporated into the Greek State. Arms, artwork, uniforms and photographs of the era take us on a journey to this glorious historical period.

I: WORLD WAR I: FIRST WORLD WAR (1914-1918)

Greece entered the First World War on the side of the Entente and emerged victorious. Weapons, relics, photographs and works of art show us the era.

J: CAMPAIGN IN LITTLE ASIA (1919-1922)

After the end of World War I, the Paris Peace Conference allowed Greece to land Greek Army forces in Asia Minor in 1919. The resistance the Greek troops met there led them to campaign in the East. The initial victories were followed by defeats, which led to the violent expulsion of the Greeks from Asia Minor. Uniforms, photographs, armaments, medals, bayonets, artwork, newspapers and printed matter transport visitors to the events of the period.

K: WORLD WAR II (1940-1945)

On 28 October 1940, Greece categorically refused to submit to fascist Italy, an ally of Germany. The Greeks enthusiastically accepted the call to protect their native lands and wrote the epoch in the mountains of Pindos. The Italian invasion was followed by the invasion of the Nazi German forces on April 6, 1941. Weapons, relics, medals, uniforms, newspapers and publications of the era transport visitors to the Epic of the 1940s.

L.: MIDDLE EAST EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

The action of the Greek Armed Forces continued in the context of the allied operations against the Axis forces in the Middle East. Armament, photographs, observation devices, printed material and uniforms are the exhibits of this collection.

M.: NATIONAL RESISTANCE

The resistance of the Greeks to the occupying forces is presented through the exhibits of this section.

N΄: GREEK PARTICIPATION IN THE KOREAN WAR (1950-1955)

Greece contributed with an expeditionary force to the UN mission in the Korean War (1950-1953). The history of this corps is presented through photographs, mines, memorabilia and relics.

JE’: CYPRUS (1963-1974)

The military events in Cyprus, from 1963 until the Turkish invasion of 1974, are presented to the public through weapons, relics, newspapers and magazines of the period, photographs and works of art.

J’: COLLECTION OF RECORDS

This exhibition includes printed material from Greek military history, such as letters, letter cards, orders, notices and other printed and manuscript material.

JD: GREEK PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL PEACEKEEPING MISSIONS

The Greek Armed Forces have participated in a number of peacekeeping missions, wherever in the world they have been called upon to assist.

IX’: TRIBUTE TO THE INFANTRY SCHOOL-CAMP “INFANTRY MAJOR BELISSARIUS JOHN”

The Museum’s exhibition concludes with a tribute to the history of the Infantry School – Camp “Major Infantryman Velissarios Ioannis”.
