On the occasion of the “OXI” anniversary, Tasos Dimos presents on 28 October 2023, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., his solo exhibition, entitled “The Epic of the ’40s”, in the foyer of the War Museum.

Inspired by photographic material of the period, the artist creates a new series of large-scale works in his characteristic impressionistic (with expressionistic elements) style, depicting subjects ranging from the soldiers fighting in the snowy landscape on the front line, to the Epirot women bringing them supplies, to the journalists sent by their newspapers to the mountain front, to the torpedoing of “Elli”.

Professor Meletes Meletopoulos, writes about the exhibition:

“The Saranda saga, which is the subject of this exhibition, was transmitted to Tasos Dimos’ generation by the generation immediately before him, the generation of his fathers, who were eyewitnesses and participants of the events. The epic of 1940 was the last great victory of the Greek arms, a victory in which Greek society participated universally. This victory fuelled the collective self-confidence of the Greek nation in the difficult decades that followed and still does today.

The depiction of the epic of 1940 in Tasos Dimos’ paintings is emblematic but at the same time anthropocentric. In Demos’ works, people are placed in their historical context, not as mere figures but as protagonists of their era. That is why the background evokes the grandeur of that shocking era and at the same time the in-betweenness of those shocking people. Interstitial that includes bravery, intransigence in the face of the demand to surrender the homeland to the invader, a determination to resist to the end, imperturbability in the face of the possibility of death, a smile in the face of the arrogance of the would-be conqueror and, ultimately, the self-confidence that comes from the history of an ancient nation that faced unimaginable adversity with irrational success.”
