War Museum

With the aim of stimulating national memory, promoting the historical continuity and unity of Hellenism, the Museum collects, preserves and presents all kinds of war relics, memorabilia and works of art of the military history of the Greeks. It studies, documents and displays the sacred struggles of the nation for freedom during its long military history, from antiquity to the present day.

The Thessaloniki branch was established in 1993 and has been operating since 2000. It is housed in the wider area of the Areos Field camp, in a building designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli (1838-1918) at the beginning of the 20th century for the needs of the Ottoman Army.

The Nafplion branch was founded in 1988 and operates in the building that housed the newly founded Military School of Evelpidon (1828-1934).

The Tripoli branch opened on 1 September 1999 and was inaugurated on 23 January 2000.

By decision of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, following a positive opinion of the Central Archaeological Council (KAS), the War Museum was granted part of the Firkas Fortress in Chania, for the organization of the Chania Branch.

The Department of the War Museum “House of General Napoleon Zervas”, opened in November 2022. In its premises, the united national resistance against the occupiers in the period 1941-1944, as well as the life of General Napoleon Zervas, is presented.

The Kalamata branch was founded in 2023 and is housed in the building of the Old Episcopal Diocese of Messinia. The themes of its exhibition include the historical period from the Greek Revolution of 1821 to the mission of the Greek Expeditionary Corps in Korea (1950-1953).

The Chalkida branch was founded in 2023 and is housed in part of the John Velissari camp. The themes of the exhibits include the historical period from the Venetian rule in Evia until today.

The Rethymno branch (Chromonastiri) was founded in 2023 and is housed in a former Venetian villa, dating back to the beginning of the 17th century. It was built in 1610 and was the summer residence of the noble Venetian Clodio family.
